Helen G. Thies, 94, of Galena, IL passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Ennoble Skilled Care and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral Mass will be 11 AM, Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena and where friends may call after 10 AM at the church until time of Mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. She was born July 4, 1923, in Galena the daughter of Frank and Susan (Roe) Condon. Helen graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1942 and went onto attend St. Anthony School of Nursing in Rockford, IL. She was united in marriage to Elmer “Red” Thies on September 16, 1946, in Galena and he preceded her in death on January 18, 2005. Helen was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader for several years. She served on the Jo Daviess Catholic Charity Board and the Country Fair Board. Helen was a volunteer for Northwest Hospice of Illinois. She was instrumental in having park benches and or trees installed in Grant Park to honor the memory of a lost loved one. Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She is survived by her three sons, John (Patricia) of Poulsbo, WA, Thomas (Edith Wienen) of East Dubuque, IL, Michael (Raechel) of Carrollton, TX and one daughter, Carol Thies of East Dubuque, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, two daughters, Susan Krohmer and Rebecca Beau, a great-grandson, Timothy Greene.
