Theresa “Terry” Townsend

Theresa “Terry” Townsend

It is with both joy and sadness that we announce the passing of Theresa “Terry” Darmofal Townsend, 93, of Galena, IL, who went peacefully to be with her Lord on April 1, 2024. A visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena, on Monday, April 15, 2024, from 10 AM to Noon, with mass beginning at Noon. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.  On April 16, 2024, a visitation will be held at the Kerr-Paryzgnot Funeral Home, 540 Dixie Highway, Chicago Heights, IL 60411, from 11 AM to 1 PM with a funeral service to follow at their chapel. The burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Steger, IL. Her husband of 63 years, George Cameron Townsend, preceded her in death. Born in Toledo, OH to Vincent and Nellie (Kupiec) Darmofal, she and George made a home in Park Forest, IL for 58 years, where she was active in politics, St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, and community service. Even into their late eighties she and George delivered food weekly through the Meals on Wheels program. Because of their dedication to the community, she and George were recognized by the Village of Park Forest through a Proclamation of Gratitude and induction into the Village Hall of Fame. After raising her children, she served in the Rich Township Assessor office, Rich Township Republicans, and held many offices and roles with Kiwanis, including Lt Governor. She had more energy than many of her friends and family who were far younger. It was truly said that she never knew a stranger. Genuinely optimistic and welcoming, she moved through this world with cheerfulness, joy, and goodness. Her faith in Jesus Christ was extremely apparent through her deep love of people and her ability to find a common ground of peace. A child of “the depression” who persevered through many hardships, including the loss of her first grandchild, Jared Townsend, she never let bitterness get so much as a toehold in her life. Her love extended to her many pets, both dogs and cats, who all adored her with an uncanny devotion. Those who knew her would agree that she was a woman of many, many words, but all loving, encouraging, amusing, or affirming. In her presence, you felt welcomed and loved. Moving to Galena in 2018, she easily opened her heart to the wonderful community at Prairie Ridge. Even after losing her husband, she remained genuinely sunny and fully engaged for the rest of her life, making many deep and abiding friendships in the Prairie Ridge community. She leaves behind her children; Kathleen Townsend, Pamela (Dan) Tindell, Steven (Karen) Townsend, and Jeffrey (Natalie) Townsend, her grandchildren; Kaila (Joey) Long, Emily Mock, Benjamin (Carlie) Townsend, Jacob (Chithra)Townsend, Grace Tindell, Imree Townsend, Judah Townsend, Annalise Townsend, Norah Townsend, and Jubilee Townsend, and great-grandchildren; Elliot, Alice, and Maya Mock, Olivia, Owen, and Oliver Townsend, Clementine Long, Junia and Asha Townsend, her brothers and sister; Stella Gerl, Edward (Rosalie) Darmofal, Robert (Sue) Darmofal, Joseph (Fran) Darmofal, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Ray, Eleanore, and Leo.  Memorial gifts may be made to the Kiwanis Foundation of Galena or St Marys Catholic Church.
