Elwyn H. Meyer, 91 of Galena, IL passed away Saturday July 18, 2015 at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. Funeral mass will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 25, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM on Friday July 24, 2015 at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, a parish rosary will be recited at 4 PM. Military honors will be accorded graveside by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193. He was born August 15, 1923 in Elizabeth, IL the son of Henry and Ruby (Anschutz) Meyer. Elwyn graduated from Elizabeth High School. He served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge. Elwyn was united in marriage to RoseMary C. Engel on September 28, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena and she preceded him in death on January 25, 2015. He was employed at the Savanna Army Depot for thirty-five years until his retirement. Elwyn was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He was an avid gardener and would always say “he loved his little piece of country in the city.” Elwyn was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him. He is survived by four children, Judith (Russell) Kieffer of Galena, John (Mary) Meyer of McAlester, OK, Barbara Meyer of Galena and Constance McGovern of Waterloo, IA, a sister, Helen Kilgore of Elizabeth, IL, ten grandchildren, Matthew (Kate) Kieffer, Nathan (Courtney) Kieffer, Justin (Jenny) Kieffer, Jacob Kieffer, Benjamin (Lindsay) Kieffer, Amanda (Tim) DuHack, Monica Meyer (Dr. Jason) Rasso, Geoffrey (Christie) Meyer, Shane (Kate) McGovern, and Christopher (Sarah) McGovern, twenty-one great grandchildren; Lucas, Eric, Emily, Jackson, Colin, Josh, Will, Drew, Zach, Nick, Maddie and Izzie Kieffer, Samantha, Gracie, Sebastian and Tucker DuHack, Logan and Evan Rasso, Izzy, Maci and Raine McGovern and his many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a grandson, James Scott McGovern, one brother, Harvey Schaible, a sister, Ruth Schaible-Fosler and all his brother in-laws and sister in-laws. The family wishes to thank the staff at Mercy Medical Center, Midwest Medical Center, Galena, Galena Stauss Senior Care Community, Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Gregory Vandigo and Galena Stauss Assisted Living your care and compassion will never be forgotten. Father Reese and Father Kos for their spiritual guidance during this difficult time.
