It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, William Robert Reid, who died on September 24, 2024, at the age of 82. He was a very kind man of immense integrity and wit, who cherished every moment spent with family and friends. His enthusiasm for life, love of camaraderie, and upbeat personality were infectious. During his 30-year career as a high school teacher, Bill taught and inspired many students and enjoyed coaching debate and soccer. He and his family resided in Naperville for 41 years. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Galena where he found his true passion and joy in land conservation. He was one of the founding members and forces behind the Galena Area Land Enthusiasts (GALE) where for more than ten years, he volunteered restoring many acres of prairie and oak savanna at Gateway Park, Horseshoe Mound, and many other areas. He felt he received more than he gave as a volunteer and was grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) and GALE. He is survived by his wife Judith of 57 years, his daughter Wendy, son-in-law Greg Theehs, son Michael, and his five grandchildren, Kevin and Andrew Theehs, and Ryan, Russel and Lily Reid, who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives remembering the lessons he taught them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Lake Erie Reid. Bill’s hope was that by prioritizing conservation and preservation efforts today, we can instill hope for future generations, ensuring they inherit a vibrant and thriving planet. Should you wish, you may make contributions to the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) in his memory. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held privately.

Bill and I started at North high about the same time around 1968. He was a steady and positive influence on me. His ready smile and sense of humor made him memorable to many. My condolences to Judy and the family. Gary and Beth Elmen
No one could have been more welcoming, receptive, nurturing, patient, and accepting of a neophyte teacher/coach than Bill. As the department chair, he mentored this greenhorn and guided her in a gentle way that ensured her classroom and coaching skills would increase. We companionably shared classroom spaces; what a boon to observe a magnificent master teacher. He always had a positive outlook, viewed life with optimism, displayed kindness to colleagues and students, and was invariably unflappable. There will never be another Bill Reid. What a gem!
