Velma C. Frey, 84 of Galena, IL passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth, IL. A funeral mass will be 11 AM, Friday, June 8, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena. Burial will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. She was born June 11, 1933, in Thomas, WV the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Skidmore) Cogar. Velma graduated from Webster Springs High School in Webster Springs, WV with the class of 1951. She was united in marriage to Thomas Frey on November 24, 1954, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Alexandria, VA. Velma attended Waubonsee Community College where she earned her degree in nursing. She worked as a probation officer for Kane County and after earning her degree worked as a nurse for many years until her retirement. Velma enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and was an avid sports fan. She is survived by her husband, Thomas, two sons, CAPT. USN RET. Thomas (Hollis) Frey Jr., of Virginia Beach, VA and CDR, USNR David (Meg) Frey of Elmhurst, IL, four grandchildren, LT. USN Thomas J. (Sarah) Frey III, LTJG Elizabeth Frey, Kristen Frey and Julia Frey, one brother, Arden Cogar and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and five sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Velma.
