Sybil White

Sybil White passed peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2023, looking forward to joining her beloved husband, Floyd, in heaven. A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM Thursday, January 12, 2023, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Galena. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. Sybil will always be remembered fondly for her sharp observations of history and current events, her interest in everything her family was doing, and her knowledge of gardening and the investment world. Her love of antiques led her to open The Sparrow Antiques, specializing in English and American furniture and collectibles which she ran for over 20 years in Chicago’s northern suburbs, and in Galena. Born in Portsmouth, England, to Stanley and May Lodge, she met her husband, Floyd, during WWII when she worked at the Dorchester Hotel in London, which housed General Eisenhower’s headquarters. Floyd was an officer assigned to Eisenhower’s staff, having already served in the Pacific theater earlier in the war. Theirs was a beautiful wartime love story, with Sybil traveling as a war bride to the U.S. to reunite with Floyd in downstate Illinois. Sybil lived in the Galena Territory with her husband for over 20 years. Her antique shop, The Sparrow Antiques, was located in the DeSoto Hotel. She relocated in 2013 to Atlanta, Georgia. Sybil is survived by her daughters, Debby (Frank) Murtha, Valarie (Clement) Carroll, and Monica (Jerome) Strigle, and her son Vincent. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, Leslie and Christopher, and her sister, Ray, and in 2010, her beloved husband, Floyd.
