Joseph “Joe” Greibe

Joseph M. “Joe” Greibe, 88, of Galena, IL passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Prairie Ridge Senior Living, Galena. The funeral mass will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, October 7, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena where friends may call after 10 AM until the time of mass. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be accorded graveside by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, is assisting the family. Joe was born on November 7, 1934, the son of Michael and Blanche (Miller) Greibe. He graduated from Galena High School in 1953. He enlisted in the Marines with ten other Galena boys on August 26, 1953. After boot camp, he was shipped to Korea in 1954 for thirteen months and was attached to the 4.2″ Mortar Company, First Marine Regiment near the DMZ. Joe received the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Medal and was honorably discharged on August 18, 1955. He married Mary P. Dillon on July 3, 1970, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and she preceded him in death on March 16, 2023. Joe was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a devoted husband and father and will be dearly missed. Joe worked at the Savanna Army Depot until his retirement in 1993. Following his retirement, he worked at Eagle Ridge Golf Course and part-time at Dick’s Supermarket in Galena. Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Galena VFW. He is survived by his daughter Josie (Dan) Collins of Cross Plains, WI; and two brothers. Michael (Josie) Greibe of Galena; Thomas (Connie) Greibe of Goose Creek, SC; a sister-in-law. Darlene Greibe; a sister-in-law, Henrietta Farr of Bellingham, WA, three brothers-in-law, Martin (Joan) Dillon of Menominee, IL, Tom Schoop of Dousman, WI, and Joseph Dillon Jr. of Springfield, IL, and his many nieces and nephews. Joe will also be missed by his grand-dog, Chloe. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and Charles (sister-in-law Kathleen), a sister Joanne Hendrickson, two sisters-in-law, Sheila Dillon and Ruth Dillon Schoop, and a brother-in-law Wilbur Farr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque.
