Janice L. “Jan” Smith, 82 of Galena, IL passed away Monday, July 25, 2022, at Hawkeye Care Center, Dubuque, IA. The funeral service will be held at Noon, Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where friends may call after 10 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Galena. She was born September 29, 1939, in Macomb, IL the daughter of Charles and Bessie Mesick. Jan studied at Rockford Beauty Academy where she was licensed in cosmetology. She married Joseph “Bouncer” Smith on July 2, 1960 and began her life in Galena. She worked at Helen’s Beauty Salon until she bought the business in 1984 and retired in 2007. Jan is survived by her three daughters, Julie Pfohl, Jill Smith, and Jennifer (Bryan) Katterhagen, one son, Mike (Sue) Herrick, and five grandchildren, Dawn Smith, Taylor (Louis) Oberdiere, Colin Smith, Vincent, and Wesley Timpe, three great-grandchildren, Janiah Rundgren, Jozlynne Smith, and Murphy Oberdiere, one sister, Virginia Hocker, her in-laws, Kathleen Sargent Teasdale, and Terry Smith, and by many special friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. The family would like to thank Dr. Wells and Dr. Khan, the medical teams at MercyOne Dubuque, Hawkeye Care Center, and Hospice of Dubuque.
