James D. Benson Jr., 84 of Galena, IL died Monday, June 4, 2018, at Midwest Medical Center, Galena, IL. Funeral service will 11 AM, Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Friends may call after 9 AM, Saturday until the time of service at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena where military honors will be accorded graveside by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193. He was born April 17, 1934, in Monroe, WI the son of James D. and Hazel (Aebly) Benson. Jim was united in marriage to Joan Feeley on August 25, 1956, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Galena and she survives. He served in the United States Army from 1956 until 1958 spending sixteen months in Korea until his honorable discharge. Jim worked for Kraft Foods from 1951 until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of Galena VFW, many bowling leagues and St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher. Jim was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. His pride and joy were his children and later on his grandchildren, babysitting and attending their many activities throughout the years. He is survived by his wife Joan of Galena, a daughter, Cindy (Keith) Knautz of Galena, a son, Dan (Amy) Benson of Galena, four grandchildren, Tim (Jodi) Knautz, Danielle Benson, Sara and Sydney Benson, a great granddaughter, Stella Knautz, sisters and brother-in-laws, Carol (Dr. Robert) Metzger and Ann (Mark) Oldenburg and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four grandchildren, Dustin, Jennifer, Jamie and Ashley Knautz, four brothers, and two sisters and his in-laws.
