Glen Don Shanks, 87, of Galena, IL passed away peacefully on February 10, 2022, at Midwest Senior Care Community.  He was born August 16, 1934, in Riceville, IA to Gladys (Anderson) and Leonard Shanks.  He met Lois Freese in Nora Springs, IA and they married on April 30, 1953, at the First Methodist Church in Mason City, IA and together they raised seven children. Glen served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956.  He enjoyed a successful career working for the SS Kresge Co / Kmart Corporation for thirty-nine years through their heyday.  During that time, Glen and Lois moved around the country as he gained greater success, living in over 22 different homes over their lifetime together.  Glen started his career by cleaning the stockroom and ended at the Kmart International Headquarters in Troy, Michigan as a Senior Buyer, holding many positions along the way.  He traveled the world for Kmart, visiting the countries of China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, England, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.  He was also the founding Director of the Kmart subsidiary, Designer Depot, traveling across the United States selecting locations for the new chain of stores.  He was well known and well liked at Kmart having made many friends along the way.  Glen was known for his bright smile, easy laughter, twinkling blue eyes, and telling good stories.  He loved nature, animals, working on their many homes, traveling across the country in their RV, and finally Galena, where they spent the last 20 years together.  Glen and Lois met outside the movie theater where Glen worked as a teen and they spent the next 71 years together, holding hands and enjoying each other’s company and their children. Step-grandchildren Samantha Hearne and Placido Serna. Great grandchildren, Isla Rose and Charlotte Shanks; Rachel, Lilly and Zachary Watson; Lani Ogunnubi; Grace and Connor Slater; and Natalie and Tristan Herrera.
