Delos John “De” Welp, 87 of Galena, IL died peacefully from natural causes with his family at his side on December 9, 2017 at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM, Monday, December 11, 2017 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where a scripture wake service will begin at 4 PM. Burial will be in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded by VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193. He was born May 20, 1930 in Dubuque, IA the son of Oswin and Agnes (Theill) Welp. He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1952 during the Korean War. When he returned to Galena, he married Mildred Agnes Westemeier in 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena and she survives. Together they raised five children. De worked at the Savanna Army Depot as a munitions destroyer then later as a fireman until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the VFW Post #2665 as well as a volunteer for the Galena Fire Department where he served actively for 28 years attaining the rank of Captain. De loved baseball and could be found behind home plate catching or playing third base for the Galena Merchants and the Gold Room with his family cheering him on from the stands. Sharing his love of baseball and numerous family outings to Wrigley Field was something he shared with his family resulting in a family full of Cub fans. De also loved the river; hunting, fishing, trapping and spending family time at the Camp every chance he got. He loved sharing these activities with his only son Rick but his girls learned early on how to put a worm on a hook as well! He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years and four of his children. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Rick “Trapper” Welp, two sons in-law, John Lyden and John Shillington, one brother, Elmo Welp, two sisters, Jeanette Duggan and Wilma Osmeyer, two sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Welp and Marcella Fraissinet, five brothers-in-law, Doug Duggan, Ozzie Osmeyer, George Fraissinet, Leo Addabbo and Gene Francis, two nephews, Mark and Joe Addabbo.
