Dale L. Hillary
Dale L. Hillary, 89 of Galena, IL passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. Funeral service will be 11:30 AM Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where friends may gather after 9 AM until time of service. Dale’s grandson, Jared Hendricks, will be officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193 immediately following the service at the funeral chapel. Burial will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded. He was born October 1, 1928, in Benton, WI the son of Harry and Eva (Halsey) Hillary. Dale served in the United States Army Air Corp. during WWII until his honorable discharge. He married Shirley Childs on April 26, 1952, at St. Michaels Catholic Church, Galena and she preceded him in death on August 31, 1971. On August 29, 1975, he married Virginia Howe-Sitzmann in Galena, and she preceded him in death on December 22, 2007. He worked in the mines and was employed at Rockford Blacktop as an operating engineer for many years until his retirement. Dale enjoyed hiking, canoeing, driving his motorcycle with sidecar, camping, ice skating and riding his homemade bobsled. He was a fun dad who loved his children, grandchildren and helping others. He is survived by his two children, Connie (Bill) Hendricks of Galena and Gary (Shari) Hillary of Scales Mound, four grandchildren, Jared (Jordan) and Ben Hendricks, Garrett and Alison (Nathan Bowers) Hillary, four great-grandchildren, Kynlee, Liam and Luther Hendricks, Angalise Bowers, his stepchildren, Suzanne, Cindy, Jennifer, Victoria, Sally, Pete, Audrey and Jonathan, many step-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Kay Hammer and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, eight brothers and three sisters, his stepchildren, Doug and Georgia, a step-grandson, Clint Sitzmann, two sisters-in-law, Nancy Stienle and Mary Childs, two brothers-in-law, Brownie Stienle and Bob Hammer. The family wishes to thank everyone who has helped during this time especially Pete, Julie, and Ted. Because of their help, Dale was able to stay in his home until almost the very end. They’d also like to thank Hospice of Dubuque and the staff at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community.
