Carolyn M. Smith, 94 of Galena, IL passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Midwest Medical Center, Galena, surrounded by her loving family. A funeral mass will be held at 11 AM, on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena, where friends may call after 10:30 AM until the time of mass. Friends may call from 5 to 7 PM, Monday, August 12, 2024, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. A parish rosary will be recited at 4:30 by the Altar and Rosary Society. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Galena. She was born November 26, 1929, in Galena, the daughter of Francis and Ethel (Fiedler) Ortscheid. Carolyn graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1947 and attended Clarke College where she received her bachelor’s degree in economics. Carol was united in marriage to Reginald J. “Bud” Smith Jr. on March 26, 1951, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church and he preceded her in death on January 29, 2006. She was a librarian aide at Galena Primary School. Carolyn enjoyed golfing, playing cards, knitting, reading, and was an avid Cubs fan. She loved spending time with her family. Survivors include her son, Terry (Mari) Smith, of Roscoe, IL; her daughter Paula DeLong of Coal Valley, IL; her son Dan of East Dubuque, IL; her daughters Anne Marie (Garth) Merrick of Rock Island; Martha (Jeff) Harsch of Winterset, IA, and Jennifer (Dan) Tranel of Cuba City, WI; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Miriam Ortscheid, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, stepmother, Hazel (Marsden) Ortscheid, two brothers, Donald and Paul, and a sister, Doris Anne. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Midwest Medical Center Auxiliary and Hospice of Dubuque in her memory.
