Billy Joe Swalley, 70 of Galena, IL passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Friends may gather from 5 to 7 pm on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Burial of his and his wife’s cremated remains will be held at a later date. He was born July 21, 1947 in Galena the son of Joseph and Ruby “Marie” (Huffman) Swalley. He was united in marriage to Monica “Kay” Darnell on November 26, 1966 in Galena and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2012. Bill retired from Royster-Clark Chemicals after many years of service. He enjoyed woodworking, playing games on his computer and playing cards. Bill was an avid NASCAR fan. He was a member of UAW Local #1391, Galena Elks Lodge, Galena Eagles Club and the Galena Generals. He is survived by his two children, Robert (Lori) Swalley of Galena and Angelia (Steve Steffen) of Worthington, IA, five grandchildren, Staff Sgt. Curtis Thommen promotable EOD Team Leader Army, Katrina (Matt) Willem, Ashley (Tim) Dobbels, Brian Swalley and Tori (Clayton Heinrich) Hermsen, three great grandchildren, Joshua, Owen and Connor, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque and his physicians for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
