Arnold Albert Ortscheid, 90, of Galena, IL passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, IA. Funeral mass will be 10:30 AM, Monday, October 12, 2015 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Galena. Friends may call from 2 to 4 PM, Sunday, October 11, 2015 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena and where a scripture wake service will be held at 2 PM. Burial will be in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded graveside by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193. He was born January 21, 1925 in Galena the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Koehler) Ortscheid. Arnold grew up in Galena on a farm. He joined the United States Army in March of 1945 during WWII where he served in the 534th Air Engineers Squadron 77th Air service group. Arnold was honorably discharged in December of 1946 as a Staff Sargent. During his time of service he received the Philippine Independence Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal. He married Marcella Berlage on October 25, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Elizabeth. They were the proud parents of five children. Arnold enjoyed his years farming on the Berlage family farm in Galena. He also sold Anamosa silos and unloaders. After retiring he often enjoyed taking his grandkids fishing and giving many rides on his John Deere tractor around his beautiful yard. Arnold enjoyed traveling with his wife Marcella and together they visited many places in Europe, Alaska and Hawaii. He was an avid Hawkeye basketball fan and never missed a game. He is survived by his wife, Marcella, his children, Robert (Susan) of Fishers, IN, Dennis (Kay) of Woodbury, MN, Ann (Jim) Haas of Byron, IL, Judy (John) Bennett of Iowa City, IA and Daniel of Iron Mountain, MI, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, two sisters, Camillus Gassen and Rita Soppe, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter in infancy, Mary Kay, three brothers, Delos, William and Vincent, two sisters, Mary Branagan and Betty Keleher. The family would like to thank Stonehill Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque your care and kindness will never be forgotten.
