Alice K. Jackson, 95, of Galena, IL, passed away on Tuesday morning, June 20, 2017 at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community, while saying her morning rosary. Funeral mass will be 11 AM, Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena where friends may call after 9:30 AM until time of mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is in charge of arrangements. Alice was born in Galena on July 16, 1921, one of 9 children of Ben and Emma (Holland) Knobbe. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School, and Galena High School, graduating with the Class of 1939. Alice married Archie L. Jackson of Preston, IA on Sept. 7, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and he preceded her death on February 26, 1998. Archie and Alice together designed and built the Grant Hills Motel in 1955, and in 1983 they added the Grant Hills Antique Auto Museum. Archie was an avid member, officer and judge of Model A’s, and they traveled often, enjoying his hobby and the friends they met throughout the United States. Alice was proud to be a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and an active member and past officer of St. Mary’s Altar & Rosary Society. She was also active in the Galena Stauss Hospital Auxiliary for many years, holding several offices, hosting quilting sessions in her home, and a recipient of its “Auxi Award”. Alice was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and the recipient of the Galena Elks Mother of the Year Award. She enjoyed long morning walks with a dear friend, and playing golf and bridge. Alice loved to bake, and was especially known for her pie making skills. Reading was a favorite pastime for Alice all of her life. She loved her family dearly, and enjoyed hosting numerous gatherings of family and friends with Archie over the years. Alice was much loved and will be dearly missed. She is survived by four of their children, Paul (Judy) Jackson and Lynn (Terry) Gaber both of Galena, Mark (Darlene) Jackson of East Dubuque, IL; Brian (Lisa) Jackson of Middleton, WI; two daughters in-law, Ginny Jackson of Rockford, IL and Susie Jackson of Springfield, IL, 19 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren, her sister, Elvira Garrett of Dubuque, Iowa, brother-in-law, Orville Jackson of Bellevue, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, four sons; Stephen, Dean, Ross and Scott, seven siblings, Orville Knobbe, Harry Knobbe, Irene Ganshirt, Cecelia Wodynski, Ethel Troy, Helen Kendrick and Florence Dimke, brother-in-law Bill Garrett, numerous in-laws and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be given to the Galena Foundation to be used for the Grant Park Restoration project. The family wishes to thank Dr. Gary Bernard and staff, and the nurses and staff of the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community for all of their care and kindness.
