Eugene “Gene” Benson

Eugene “Gene” Benson, 72, of Galena, IL, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Midwest Senior Care Center in Galena. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public services. The Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena is assisting the family. He was born on March 7, 1954, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Robert and Jenny (Dunston) Benson. Gene graduated from Galena High School in 1972. He married Gail Schoenfeld in September 1973. Gene worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 25+ years in the maintenance department at Eagle Ridge Inn & Resort. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and bowling. Gene is survived by his three children, Jason and Shawn Benson, both of Janesville, WI, and Cheri Bower of Freeport, IL, and a sister, Ada Melancon of Freeport. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert Jr., a sister, Roxanne Krohmer, and a grandson, Austin Benson.
