Philip R. Holsten
Philip R. Holsten, 83, a longtime resident of the Galena area, passed away on September 30, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on April 5, 1941, in Hinsdale, IL, the son of Elmer and Catherine Holsten. He started working at Electro-Motive out of high school, then joined the Navy, where he did two tours to the Middle East and was stationed out of Norfolk, VA. When he returned, he continued working at Electro-Motive for 30 + years until he retired. A trip to the Galena area in the early 70s turned into what would be his final dream home. Phil enjoyed boating and fishing on the Mississippi, a good meal at Catfish Charlie’s and Potosi Brewing, cutting his grass and watching wildlife, going to drag races, watching TV, seeing the Cubs win the pennant, and spending time with his family. In his final days, Phil re-lived his Navy deployment and was proud to have served his country. Phil is survived by his sister, Sue (Jerome) Maly of Darien, IL, a nephew, Christopher (Taylor) Maly of Lemont, IL, and a great-nephew, Maddox Maly. He was preceded in death by his parents. He will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Galena, IL. Thank you to all the healthcare professionals at St. Dominic Villa, Ennoble, and Hospice of Dubuque for caring for Phil. The family would also like to thank the neighbors for their help and kindness. He will be missed. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.
