Lawrence C. Holland
Lawrence C. Holland, 89 of Menominee, IL and formerly Galena passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016 at his home. Funeral Mass will be 11 AM, Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Nativity BVM Church, Menominee. Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM, Monday, February 22, 2016 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where a rosary will be recited at 4:45 PM. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, IA. He was born September 11, 1926 in Woodbine, IL the son of Wesley and Marie (Handt) Holland. Larry was united in marriage to Frances Henkel on September 16, 1945 at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on January 25, 2002. He farmed while working at the Dubuque Pack for twenty-five years until his retirement in 1984. After retirement he drove bus for The River Cruises of Dubuque. Larry loved the outdoors and gardening. He enjoyed helping others, spending time with his grandchildren, giving sound advice, and splitting his own wood right up until the end. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Nativity BVM Church. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Outcalt of Dubuque, Linda (Tom) Russell, Eldridge, IA, Elizabeth (Patrick) Hess of Poynette, WI, Mary Rose Schmidt of Dubuque, Carol Holland of Menominee and Cathy (Mark) Helling of Asbury, IA, his sons, Frank Holland of Galena, Paul (Marcia) Holland of Rapid City, IL, Larry (Tammie) Holland of Orion, IL, thirty-one grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren, two sisters, Bertha (Harold) Herrman and Ruth Marks, one sister in-law, Shirley Holland, son in-law, Dorrance Averkamp, a daughter in-law, Beth Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three daughters, Lorraine, Rose Mary and Susan, two sons, William and Harold, two grandchildren, William Averkamp and Lawrence C. Holland III, a great grandchild, Wesley Kennedy, three brothers and two sisters and three sons in-law, Roger Pettera, John Outcalt and Donald Schmidt. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Finley Home Health Care and the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department for their compassion during this difficult time. To our sister Carol and nephew Kevin Averkamp your companionship the past fourteen years meant the world to our father. Larry “lived a very full life, by his own terms, with his own plans and left without lingering.”
