He was born May 22, 1925 in Neihart, Montana, where his father was a doctor for the local mining company. The family moved to Springfield, IL shortly after he was born. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1942, and began an engineering degree at Purdue University. In 1942 he applied to and was accepted into the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY for training as a midshipman. In early 1944 he began service on a tanker as a deck officer. He made four convoy crossings of the Atlantic carrying aviation fuel and a solo crossing of the Pacific to participate in the Philippine Invasion and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in 1946 with a B.S. In Nautical Science. He returned to Purdue for his B.S. in Engineering and he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Indiana University. He had a long and distinguished career practicing Admiralty Law in Chicago, dealing with all matters of international trade and commerce throughout the Great Lakes and around the world. During his career, he was instrumental in starting two Great Lakes tug boat companies, one Great Lakes shipping company, revitalizing the ports of Chicago, Kenosha, and Duluth, and was one of the founders of the Riverport Railroad at the former Savanna Army Depot. After closing his law practice in Chicago, he moved to Galena where he resided with his second wife, Levon O’Day Jackman, until it was necessary for her to move to Fargo for medical reasons. After her passing, he returned to his beloved Galena where he lived until his passing. Warren loved to travel, loved the arts and was always on the lookout for a new idea or opportunity to make a difference in the world. He involved himself in development projects in the Middle East, Haiti, and here in the U.S. He loved his church and was active on the Vestry serving as Warden, and sang in the choir. If he wasn’t traveling, attending an art opening or the opera, he was happiest at home with a glass of wine, surrounded by files and working on his latest project. Warren is survived by his first wife, Betty Schlesinger Greenwood of Berthoud, CO, and his children, Philip (Theresa) Jackman, Galena, Steven Jackman, Taos, NM, Anne (Eric) Pederson, Berthoud, CO, and Amy (Guy) Fieling, Erie, CO. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Warren was preceded in death by his wife, Levon, and his son, David Jackman of Denver, CO. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to either Grace Church Outreach Ministries or The Galena Center for the Arts.
