Richard L. Babcock, 72 of Galena, IL passed away Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. Funeral service will be Saturday September 23, 2017 at 11 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, Galena where friends may gather after 10 AM until time of service. Burial will be at a later date in Resurrection Garden, Galena. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. He was born December 5, 1944 in Warsaw, IN the son of Dale and Virginia (Coleman) Babcock. Richard was owner of Babcock Wallpapering where he reproduced historical wallpaper as can be seen in the Grant House, and other historic Galena homes. He worked at the original Poopsies, was a buyer for Ann Chapman’s and worked in other Main Street businesses. Richard was very active in the productions of Off Broadway at Turner Hall in Galena. He loved attending Renaissance Faires and designing and making elaborate Renaissance costumes. He was generous and compassionate, starting the knitting ministry at Grace and making hats, mittens, scarves, blankets and prayer shawls, that were distributed through the Galena Food Pantry, the Dubuque Homeless Shelter, Shelter Care Ministries in Rockford and others in need. He was very involved in ministry at Grace Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild and Worship Committee. He not only served as Challist during worship, but also trained new members of the Altar party. He was welcoming and always willing to help. He participated in Cursillo, and in activities sponsored by the United Churches of Galena. He is survived by his loving husband, Alan Oyen, his niece, Jennifer (Jeffery) Judy, great nephew, Nicholas and great niece, Katherine. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Susan Rathbun. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Gary Bernard, Galena Stauss Senior Care Community and the Grace Episcopal Church family and choir for their care and compassion during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Galena in memory of Richard.
