Mary L. Hoftender, 94 of Menominee, IL passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family. A mass of Christian burial will be 11 AM, Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Nativity BVM Church, Menominee, IL. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM, Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where a parish rosary will begin at 4 PM. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She was born on July 26, 1923, in Galena, IL the daughter of Charles and Agnes (Flynn) Staver. Mary was united in marriage to the love of her life Melvin Hoftender on November 21, 1953, at St. Mary’s Church in Galena, IL and he preceded her in death on July 24, 1979. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was her everything. Mary especially enjoyed family time and family gatherings. She was a great baker, spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her chocolate chip cookies. Mary loved to crochet and made beautiful gifts for many. She was an avid Euchre player and looked forward to monthly card games with her friends. She is survived by her children Ruth (Rick) Foht, Janet (Darryl) Ricke and Merlin (Gail) Hoftender all of East Dubuque, IL, David (Mary Anne) Hoftender of Scales Mound, IL and Dale Hoftender (Missy Schildgen) of Dubuque, IA. Twelve Grandchildren Kelly (Jim) Lechnir, Amy Heinold, Brian Hoftender, Jason (Eugenia) Foht, Jonathan and Justin Foht, Megan (Todd) Placke and Michael Ricke, Jessica (Neil) Schonhoff, Christopher (Katie) Hoftender, Jordan and Nicholas Hoftender. Twelve great-grandchildren. Elise and Romey Foht, Camdyn Placke, Ethan, Tyler and Sophie Schonhoff, Lydia and Luke Hoftender, Lily and James Jr. Lechnir, D.J. and Justice Heinold, step-grandchildren Emilee and Allysa Anderson, Jeremy, Tony and the late Andrew Runde, seven step great-grandchildren, her sister Alberta Trebian and sister-in-law Phyllis Staver. She was preceded in death by her parents, her father and mother-in-law John and Mathilda Hoftender, her brothers Charles and Joseph Staver, sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen (George) Kitto, Marita (Robert) Tippett, Rose (Charles Jr.) Petitgout and in-laws, Leo (Berthal) Hoftender, Rosella (Alfred) Ricke, Viola (Joseph) Rojemann, Edna (Robert) Bauer, Clarence (Evelyn) Hoftender, Elmer (Dorothy) Hoftender, Duane Trebian and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Ronald Schope and his nurse Lori for their excellent care, kindness and compassion over the past several years. A special thanks to her grandchildren Brian, Jonathan, Justin, Megan and Michael who over the past 6 years dedicated countless hours in caring for their grandmother.
