Marion B. “Pete” Schmidt 89 of Galena, IL passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. Funeral Service will be 11 AM, Monday, March 6, 2017 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena. Friends may call from 1 to 4 PM on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel. He was born October 9, 1927 in Guilford Township the son of Albert and Dorothy (Brew) Schmidt. Pete served in two branches of the military, the Army and the Merchant Marines. Upon his return, he married Ruth M. Schumacher on January 31, 1953. He bought his father’s restaurant, Schmidt’s Cafe, in Elizabeth. Together they operated the restaurant until their move to Galena where they opened Pete’s Steakburger Inn. They sold the restaurant in 1990. Pete who always enjoyed cooking went to work part-time at Benjamin’s. Pete is survived by his wife, Ruth, four children; Jean Schmidt, Linda Schmidt, Loren Schmidt and Karl (Jen) Schmidt and two grandchildren, Jakob and Olivia. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Donna Williams, and two brothers, Donald “Bing” and Charles Schmidt, a brother in-law, Bruce Williams and a sister in-law, Rosie Schmidt. The family would like to thank the staff of Galena Stauss Senior Care Community, Hospice of Dubuque and Dr. Vandigo for their excellent care and compassion.
