Gayle I. (Osburn) Burns, daughter of Harvey and Isabelle (Eulberg) Osburn, 92 years old of Galena, IL died Friday, August 12, 2016 at her home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 18, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena. Burial will be in the family plot in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM, Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where a parish rosary will be recited at 4 PM and the Catholic Daughter prayer service will follow. She was born November 29, 1923 in Savanna, IL. Gayle graduated from Galena High School the class of 1941. She was a graduate of Bayless Business College, Dubuque, IA. Gayle married James L. Burns of Shullsburg, WI, June 15 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena and he preceded her in death May 10, 1956. She was employed by Illinois Public Aid Commission and the First National Bank of Galena, and then City of Galena for 30 years as Bookkeeper. She was appointed City Clerk of Galena and later was elected until her retirement in 1989. She was elected City Treasurer of Galena in 1997 and held this position until 2001. In 1972, she lost her hearing completely overnight and learned to communicate by lip reading. In 1990 she had a Cochlear Implant, which brings in sound and this along with lip reading made it easier for her to communicate. She enjoyed playing cards and also liked to sew, knit, crochet and did a lot of crafting. Her latest using beads of various sizes and for jewelry and crafting. She was always busy making something. She had a dog named “Precious” who was her companion for many years. She always said “Precious” helped her through trying times. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, its Altar Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters, VFW Auxiliary, Galena Jo Daviess Historical Society, Midwest Hospital Aux, Galena Elks Lodge #882 where she was elected Elks Mother of the Year in 1989. She is survived by her son, Harve J. (Barbara) Burns, grandson, Christian (Leah) Burns, two great grandsons, Braydon and Bentley, brother-in-law, George (Lorna) Burn and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded death by her parents, her husband, a son DuWayne P. Burns in 2009, sister, Arline Spurr and brother in-law, Edmund Spurr.
